What good legal service should look like

Clients should expect clear advice, realistic assessment of risk, preparation before deadlines, prompt communication and a strategy that reflects the evidence rather than generic reassurance. In privately funded matters, scope and cost should also be clear before substantial work is undertaken.

For criminal defence, that can mean advice before interview, evidence preservation, detailed representations, case preparation and continuity from investigation through court. In civil litigation, it means identifying the cause of action, evidence, leverage, cost and procedural route before positions harden.

NO OUTCOME PROMISES

Preparation, judgment and communication are the standard.

Every case depends on its facts, evidence, law and procedural position. Reviews can tell you about service; they cannot predict the result of a new case.

CHOOSING A SOLICITOR

Use reviews as one part of the decision, not the whole decision

Client feedback can show how a firm communicates, explains difficult issues and manages expectations, but a review is not evidence that another case will have the same outcome. Legal cases turn on their own facts, evidence, law and procedure.

Check the regulator

Confirm that the firm and solicitor are regulated and that the contact details used to instruct them are genuine. Theodorous is the trading name of Christodoulos Ltd, SRA No. 809508.

Check relevant experience

A five-star review in an unrelated area is less useful than evidence of relevant experience. For criminal work, look at investigation, court and Legal Aid capability. For civil work, look at the type and procedural stage of the dispute.

Ask who will do the work

The solicitor named on a website is not necessarily the person running every case. Clients should know who has conduct, who supervises the file and when counsel or another specialist may be instructed.

Understand fees and scope

A useful quote should explain what is included, what is excluded and what could cause the estimate to change. Funding can differ substantially between criminal Legal Aid, private criminal work and civil litigation.
